Things to know before blogging
Today, everyone just wants to start a blog without considering some important things. To start and make a blog successful, there are things you have to take into consideration. In this post, I have compiled a list of 10 things to consider when starting your own blog.

1. Decide Why you want to blog

The first thing to consider before you start blogging is to know the reason why you want to blog in the first place, this will have an influence on how you blog. You need to determine whether you are blogging to show your expertise on something, as a hobby, or to learn about a field of knowledge in the process of blogging or blogging as a source of income. Having this in mind will let you decide whether you go into blogging as something you do for a full time or part time and also determine the amount of seriousness you put into it.

2. Check Your passion for blogging

Aside from deciding your purpose for blogging, you need to be passionate about it. Nowadays blogging is not something you just start out of nowhere just because everyone is doing it, you need more than just that to stay in the blogging game. To remain relevant and make a name for yourself, you need to develop a passion for it.

The truth is you will find it extremely difficult to blog in the long run if you don’t have passion for blogging. A lot of people just start a blog and mid-way they stop because they can’t keep up with it.

Blogging is not just about writing, it involves a whole lot, like generating blog post ideas, writing your blog post, editing it, designing blog post images, getting it in front of your target audience and a whole lot more. You need to have something to push you when you face tough moments; this is especially true when you are blogging for a source of income.

3. Niche

Having a niche to blog about is a very important thing to consider before you start a blog. A niche is a field of knowledge or a particular area that your blog seeks to educate people about. Before you start a blog, consider choosing a niche that is not saturated too much in order to make a name for yourself.

Some niche are just too filled and you will struggle to get the necessary visibility for your blog, unless you are an expert in a niche and you can bring something new or better to that niche with your blog, consider choosing a niche that is not too saturated. Examples of niches that are too saturated include, entertainment, fashion, sports, blogging, and so on amongst a host of others.

You can also decide to start a multi-niche blog, that is a blog that concentrates on more than one niche, but make sure the niches are inter-related. Whatever niche you choose, make sure it is one that you can provide content on and has a fairly good number of audiences.

4. Your target audience

After deciding on the niche you want to blog on, the next step is to identify your target audience. Your target audiences are the people your blog appeals to, in order words, they are the set of people that your blog wants to cater for.

If for example your niche is about blogging, then you target audience will be people who own a blog or who want to start a blog. Similarly, if you have a travel blog, then your target audience should be tourists, travellers and the likes.

Having a target audience saves you a lot of time and money because it helps you focus your promotional efforts to the right audience and not to end up promoting your blog to the wrong people.

5. Domain name and web host

This is the technical part of blogging which is crucial to the survival of your blog. The web host is just like the house of your blog on the internet. The worst mistake you can make when starting a blog is to choose a bad web hosting company to host your blog. Your web host could make or mar your blog. It’s very important to choose a good web host that will host your blog. Below are the things to consider when deciding the host of your blog:

  •          Uptime

To decide your webhost you need to know how reliable the host’s servers are. Uptime is the time or hours that a server is available online, in other words, it is the amount of time that your website is online. Normally, server uptime should be 100% but no web host is perfect as there are times where there might be server upgrade or performance check. You should not opt for any web host with less than 99% uptime.

  •             Storage and bandwidth
The amount of disk space available for your website including images, videos, databases others is known as storage. The ideal storage space needed for a small or medium-scale website is 5GB. It’s vital that you compare the amount of storage space offered by different web hosts. Some websites do claim that they offer unlimited disk space which is a technically impossible, also choose a web host that allows you to upgrade when your website grows.

Bandwidth, on the other hand, is the amount of data transferred between a website and its visitors.

For a website that estimates to get between 1000-2000 visitors per day, it should have a bandwidth of 50GB. Although some hosts claim they provide you with unlimited bandwidth, it will be slower and heavy than hosts with bandwidth limits. So it’s important to compare the bandwidths offered by different hosts to find the most suitable for your blog.

  •                Security
The internet is a rough place to be, you need security for your blog which your web host should be able to provide. Your web host should be able to provide secure socket layer (SSL) certificates, they are important for keeping your blog safe.

  •                24/7 technical support
Your web host should be able to offer technical support for you all round the clock; they should have a support team on the ground to assist you anytime you need help. You should also check if the they have multiples channels through which you can contact them.

Although there are other factors to consider, the above factors are the major ones you should take into account when choosing a host for your blog. That being said, below are some of the best web hosting companies you can use:
